Maternity Worldwide is a nonprofit that specializes in pregnancy related health. You can give back this holiday season by “Saving a Life This Christmas”. Purchase a personalized Safe Birth Certificate as a gift to sponsor a safe birth.

Maternity Worldwide’s motto is “No woman or girl should die giving birth”. And the statics of just that happening in developing countries is staggering. Across the world, a mother dies every two minutes in pregnancy or while giving birth. I have trouble wrapping my mind around that.

I think back to my first pregnancy where my only worries were morning sickness and swollen feet in the last trimester. I gained weight. I and my baby were healthy. Sure, labor was tough, but the thought of dying never crossed my mind.

Now, consider a pregnant woman in a poor country. Access to health care is limited either by choice or conditions. She may not consider pregnancy and childbirth a reason to receive medical intervention. She may not have transportation to reach a health facility. Her choices may be affected by seeing so many infants die during childbirth, or by the beliefs of her family. To get the full effect of how Maternity Worldwide works, take time to read some of the individual mother’s stories.

Maternity Worldwide has studied the reasons for lack of maternal healthcare and how to make changes. They work using the Three Delays Models which includes the input of women and the assistance of local communities where their projects take place.

So, give a gift that gives back. Purchase a Safe Birth Certificate for $24 and $81 for an emergency delivery for a mother in sub Saharan Africa. Although you’ll see the prices in British pounds, they will convert to dollars when you check out. This is a worthy cause.
